Mahjong B

Mahjong is a relatively new group formed at the end of 2019.

It now meets twice a month, on the 1st Wednesday and the 3rd Monday, in Uphall Community Education Centre from 2-4 p.m. Here is a link to the Wednesday Group - you only need to join one group to meet twice a month.

Mahjong (there are alternative spellings such as Mah Jong, Mah Jongg) is a game for 4 players. It has similarities to many card games in that the winner is the person who is first to collect a hand of sets. Instead of cards, however, there are tiles. Instead of suits like diamond or clubs, there are "circles", "characters" and "bamboos" as well as "winds" and "dragons". Part of the fun is learning the traditional Chinese names for the sets.

We have the complete range of experience from fairly regular players to absolute beginners but we all help each other.

  • New for 2024

    Until now we have been learning the basics of playing Mahjong. From January we will be offering the option of playing and also scoring. This will reduce the number of games we play. However, scoring is an important aspect of the game which everyone should learn.
