Anne Walsh will lead the next walk on Saturday 22 June, along part of the Shale Trail, beginning in East Calder.
Meet at the Almondell, south car park, East Calder at 10.00am. They are putting in new traffic light just at the entrance though they may not be operational by 22nd June, the date of the walk.
We will come out of the car park on to main Street and walk to the entrance a few hundred yards along and follow the Shale Trail to Uphall Railway Station. This section is 2.9 miles and will take approximately just over an hour, depending on our walking pace. It is mainly flat on gritted path. There are no facilities during this walk, though you can sit for a few minutes in the station shelter before returning on the same path, until after the Almondell viaduct when we will go down the steps which are a bit steep, and return to the car park via the park, crossing over the aquaduct.
We are liable to meet runners and trail bikes as well as other walkers, some with dogs, off the lead.
For anyone who wants, we can have lunch at the Almondell cafe at Veitch's Garden centre which is just a few hundred yards from the car park on the other side of the road. It is never too busy so we shouldn't need to book.
The whole walk is just under 6 miles but could be shortened by turning round sooner if people find it too much.
If planning to go, please let Walk Leader know by the evening of the open meeting on 19th June.
Please note that the turn from A71 that brings you out close to Veitch’s is closed so you have to go through East Calder Main St or get off A71 at the sign for Jupiter Artland but keep going ahead.
