The u3a (formerly known as University of the Third Age) is a unique, lively, friendly and exciting self-help educational movement offering a wide range of creative and leisure activities for those whose days are no longer tied to earning a living.
It is a good way to meet people and to make new friends. Costs are minimal because our activities are organised by our members, who share their skills and expertise.
We have a monthly Open Meeting with a wide variety of speakers together with a growing number of smaller ‘Interest Groups’ focusing on different subjects. Examples of groups are Craft, Science, Art Appreciation, Music, Poetry, History, Scrabble and Mahjong - more information on Groups can be found here. There is friendly support to get you started whatever your level of knowledge or educational background.
Some members have a great depth of experience in their own field and the u3a gives them the opportunity to share their knowledge and enthusiasm to inspire and support others.
Our meetings are well organised, but also very informal to create an enjoyable atmosphere while e.g. learning to play the Ukulele. Knowledge is exchanged, and you go home having learned something new.
Some groups take trips to places of interest: the Art Appreciation Group visits museums, galleries and workshops in the Central Belt, the Cinema Group attends film performances at the Hippodrome Theatre in Bo’ness, and the Walking Group visits different locations each season.
We currently have over 100 members and 19 Interest Groups.
Eligibility: Anyone who is no longer in full time employment.
If you are interested in one or more of our groups, why not come along and find out what we are about, and meet like-minded friendly people with no obligation to join. You are allowed to try two Groups free before deciding to join
Everyone is also welcome to attend one of our monthly meetings to find out more and decide whether the u3a is for them; they are held on the third Wednesday of each month (except July) from 2 – 4pm at:
Uphall Community Education Centre, Strathbrock Place, Uphall, West Lothian, EH52 6BN
Tel: 01506 854451
The annual subscription is £20 for 2024-25 (academic year). Fees are reviewed annually.
There is usually an additional charge of £1 per member for attending the monthly Open Meeting at Uphall Community Education Centre, to cover speakers' fees and refreshments.
